About

Learn about the menstrual cycle to better support female athletes in achieving their goals. Module 1: A clear overview of the menstrual cycle and how it works. We will take you through; what defines a normal period, signs and symptoms that may indicate something isn’t normal and an introduction to contraception, including key considerations for female athletes. This foundational video sets the stage for why learning about the menstrual cycle is important when working with and supporting female athletes. Module 2: Common menstrual cycle abnormalities and what they mean. In the first part we delve into RED-S covering; Amenorrhea (the absence of menstruation) and its implications, Relative Energy Deficiency Syndrome (RED-S) and how it affects female athletes, the physical, emotional, and performance-related impacts of RED-S, and practical steps you can take to help identify, address, and manage RED-S. In the second part, we outline Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), Menorrhagia (heavy menstrual bleeding), Dysmenorrhea (painful periods) and Endometriosis. Each condition is explained in clear, accessible terms, with a focus on how to recognise symptoms and support athletes in managing them effectively. Module 3: Training and the menstrual cycle. Finally, we will go through; why tracking the menstrual cycle is a valuable tool for athletes and how different phases of the cycle can affect an athlete’s training, recovery, energy levels, and mood. We show how every athlete is unique and tracking helps identify individual patterns and needs, and how athletes can use this information to improve their training and wellbeing. This session equips you with practical insights to better understand and respond to the physical and emotional needs of the athletes you support.
